Beneath the Surface: A New Acrylic Ink Series Inspired by Underwater Life

My newest series of acrylic ink paintings grew directly out of the fascination with water. These works are inspired by tidepools and underwater life.

Each painting in this collection is a meditation on movement and mystery. I wanted to capture that feeling of peering beneath the surface and discovering a whole world in motion.

Letting Water Lead the Way

Working with acrylic ink feels like collaborating with the element I’m trying to portray. The ink flows with its own energy, bleeding, pooling, and shifting in ways I can’t always predict. I lean into that fluidity. I use water to push and pull the ink across the surface, layering transparent washes, letting edges blur, and creating space for unexpected details to emerge.

Inspired by the Ocean’s Hidden Worlds

I’ve always been drawn to tidepools. They’re like secret windows into the ocean’s inner life, tiny, self-contained ecosystems full of color, texture, and movement. In this series, I wanted to honor that magic. I thought about the quiet complexity of underwater plants, the organic repetition of sea urchins and shells, the way light refracts through shallow water.

Rather than paint these scenes literally, I focused on the impressions they leave, such as soft, shifting shapes, delicate tendrils, layered colors, and subtle glints of metallic ink that catch the light like scales or sand.

Building an Atmosphere of Depth and Stillness

In order to make the viewer feel like they’re underwater, I focused on creating depth. Many of these pieces use overlapping translucent layers to mimic the sensation of looking through water. Others have tightly composed bursts of detail, like a cluster of anemones or the intricate surface of a rock, floating in soft, open space. Together, the collection moves between calm and current, stillness and flow.

The Series Is Now Live

This new body of work is now available on my website, both as original paintings and select fine art prints. Each piece was created with archival acrylic inks on heavyweight paper and finished with care. You can view the full series [insert link], and I’m always happy to answer questions or help find the right piece for your space.

Let’s Go Deeper

This series means a lot to me. It came from a place of curiosity, awe, and a deep love of the natural world. I hope it invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and imagine what exists just beneath the surface.

Thank you for being here.
