A Forest and Mountain Mural for a Little Adventurer’s Bedroom

mural in a child's room

The Concept

This forest and mountain mural evokes a sense of wonder and possibility. Mountains on the horizon. The sun peaking out from behind a peak. An airplane zips across the sky, a tiny symbol of all the adventures that lie ahead. And in the foreground, layers of forest trees recede into the distance. It is a scene that invites a child to dream of adventure.

The Style

This mural feature bold, solid sections of color. Each element of the landscape rendered as a clean, confident shape with its own distinct hue. The mountains are strong, graphic forms, and the forest trees are stylized silhouettes, each layer a different shade of green. This approach of solid color, clean shapes, graphic simplicity works very well for children’s murals.

Designed to Grow With Him

One of the things I always think carefully about when painting a child’s room is longevity. Children grow up fast, and a mural that feels perfectly pitched for a toddler can quickly start to feel too young for a school-age child, and babyish for a teenager. The style of the imagery strongly affects how the mural ages with the child. This mural’s graphic, design-forward style ages beautifully alongside the child.

The color palette was chosen with the same longevity in mind. Rather than going for overly sweet or garish colors, I built the palette of complex, considered colors. It is a palette that feels energetic and playful for a young child, but sophisticated enough to stand the test of time.

The Airplane

Small, simple, and perfectly placed against the open sky, it does so much with so little. It adds a sense of scale, reminding you just how vast those mountains and skies really are. It adds movement and narrative and it adds a note of pure childhood magic.

An Invitation to Adventure

forest and mountain mural

More than anything, I hope this mural inspires and makes the world feel full of possibility. Mountains to climb. Forests to explore. Skies to fly through. The whole wide world, right there on the bedroom wall, waiting to be discovered. If this little adventurer grows up with a love of the outdoors, a curiosity about far-off places, and a sense that the world is endlessly worth exploring, I would like to think his bedroom wall had something to do with it.
