Californian Wildflower Mural

Location: Child’s Bedroom

Size: 10 ft x 10 ft

The Inspiration

There is something so fitting about filling a child’s room with Californian wildflowers.

California has some of the most breathtaking wildflowers in the world. Bringing them indoors and scaling them up to fill a wall presented an exciting challenge.

Larger Than Life

Rather than creating a wallpaper-style pattern of small repeated blooms, I painted the flowers at a larger than life scale. This makes them feel more immersive and magical. The effect is playful and wonder-filled, but also beautiful in a way that transcends the typical children’s room aesthetic.

Designed to Grow With Her

One of the things the family was most thoughtful about was longevity. They didn’t want a mural that would feel babyish in a few years and need to be painted over. They wanted something their daughter could grow up with, something that would delight her at five, and feel cool and artistic as a teenager.

The Design and Painting Process

I first sketched the composition on paper and worked with the clients to determine the color scheme. I then sketched the design loosely on the wall. Finally, I painted over my sketch, using a small brush to ensure solid color over the textured wall.

A Room She Will Always Love

What I hope most for this mural is that it grows alongside its owner and continues to be a source of wonder and delight.
